Dune: Awakening Console Development to Begin After PC Launch

Funcom has announced that development of the console versions of Dune: Awakening will commence only after the PC version is completed, leaving console players with a wait before they can dive into the vast deserts of Arrakis. During Gamescom 2024, Funcom premiered a new trailer, confirming an early 2025 release window for the PC version, and noted that details about the console release dates will be shared at a later time.

When asked for further information during a gameplay presentation session, Funcom developers explained that their current focus is on the PC version as the lead platform. Development on the console ports will begin only after the PC launch is finalized.

This approach comes as Dune: Awakening continues its extensive testing phase. The game entered closed beta at the end of 2023, with repeated beta testing periods occurring throughout early 2024. By spring 2024, the testing entered a continuous phase, allowing Funcom to refine gameplay mechanics and performance based on player feedback. Initially, a small team of testers was involved, but the studio plans to significantly expand the pool of testers by the end of this year to further stress-test and polish the game.

Funcom‘s phased development strategy is reminiscent of its previous work on Conan Exiles. That game launched first on PC in early access in January 2017, enabling the team to gather player feedback and make necessary adjustments over several months. After this period of refinement, Conan Exiles saw a simultaneous full release on PC and consoles in May 2018, providing a more stable and optimized experience across all platforms.

However, Dune: Awakening will not feature an early access period. Funcom has confirmed that the game will launch as a fully finished product on PC, marking a departure from the early access model used for Conan Exiles. This decision reflects a more controlled approach to the release, aiming for a polished product right from launch.

When questioned about potential console-exclusive features, Funcom representatives emphasized that their current priority is on delivering a high-quality experience on PC. Console-specific details and adaptations will be considered after the core game is finalized on its lead platform.

While console players are still waiting for more specific information, Funcom has confirmed that further details on the console versions, including release dates, will follow at a later stage. For now, Dune: Awakening is set to debut on PC in early 2025, with additional announcements expected as development continues to progress.
